Managing domain contacts
How to update your Domain Name Contacts
Under ICANN rules, every domain name owner is required to provide "up-to-date" contact information for each of the domains they own. This information is then made available to a greater or lesser extent via the WHOIS database. Gandi automatically provides a WHOIS privatization for your contact information, so that only the required information is publicly available.
Types of Contacts
Contacts for a domain name fall into one of the categories below:
- Owner Contact: This is the natural person (individual), company or other legal entity that is the legal owner of the domain name.
- Administrative Contact: In cases where the entity listed is not directly the person who administers the domain name, the Administrative Contact is the person or entity who is responsible for managing the domain name.
- Technical Contact: The Technical Contact is the individual or entity responsible for the technical aspects of managing a domain name. He or she may be responsible for keeping the domain configuration up to date, while another contact (e.g. Billing) may be responsible for paying renewal fees and so on.
- Billing contact: The billing contact is the person or entity responsible for paying the costs associated with the domain (renewal, additional mailboxes, etc.). This contact is generally the recipient of renewal notifications, where this is specified.
Important reminder:
If you change the owner's email address, you must tick the box "I authorize Gandi to be the "Designated Agent" according to ICANN rules" before you can change the address. For many registries, this operation prevents any transfer for 60 days. By clicking on this box, Gandi takes responsibility for this change in order not to apply this blocking period.
How to declare a new Contact
You can change the contacts of a domain by using one of the processes described below. You can change a contact for a single domain at a time, or you can replace one or more contacts on several domains at once via the Advanced view of domain name management.
Changing a contact for a single domain
IMPORANT: When you declare a new contact for a domain, the previous contact retains all rights to the domain name. If you want to remove this contact's access rights to the domain, you must first go to the Sharing page for the domain in question, and delete the permissions assigned to this user.
- Log into your Gandi account.
- Go to the "DOMAIN" section.
- Choose the domain name in question from the list, then go to the "Domain Contacts" tab.
- Next to the type of contact that you want to update, click on "Change".
- Fill in the contact form using the information for the new contact.
- When you're finished, click "Save" to confirm.
- Make sure that the contacts validate the email they will receive by clicking on the link provided therein.
- Make sure that the new contact(s) also accept the invitation to manage the domain, which they will receive by email (if you have ticked the box to send an invitation to give them permissions on the domain).
Important:
Gandi is required by ICANN to verify the email addresses provided for Domain Contacts. The new contact will not be able to view or manage the domain until they have validated their email address by clicking on the link sent to them in the automated email that they will receive. For new domain names, failure to validate the owner's email address will result in the domain being suspended after 15 days.
How to change contacts of multiple domains
To change one or more contacts for several domains at a time, please follow the instructions below:
- Log into your Gandi account, then go to the "DOMAIN" section in the left-hand menu.
- Switch to the " Chart " view if you are not already there. If you see the "Advanced View" button displayed in a shaded area, you are already in Advanced View.
- Tick the box to the left of the domains for which you want to make the changes.
- A secondary menu will open at the bottom. Click on "[ ፧ Manage contacts]", then on Update contacts to begin the procedure.
- Choose the contacts you want to change across all domains. Bear in mind that changing the owner contact is not possible as it requires a separate procedure
https://docs.gandi.net/en/domain_names/change_owner/index.html
- For each type of contact to be amended, choose an existing contact from the drop-down menu or Create a new contact. If you choose an existing contact, you will be able to modify it once it has been selected using the "Edit data" button.
- Once you have made your changes, click on " Verify ". The system will then check whether the contact you have chosen is valid for all the domains selected, according to the rules of the registries concerned. If everything is OK, click "Confirm". If not, you will need to correct those in error.
- Check that the new contact(s) validate their email address by clicking the link they will receive in an email.
- Make sure that the new contact(s) also accept the invitation to manage the domain, which they will receive via email (if you have ticked the box to send an invitation to give them permissions on the domain).
Note:
Each registry may have specific rules regarding administrative, technical and billing contacts. For example, the .ES registry requires these contacts to be Natural Persons and therefore does not accept companies.
