When should I use an MX record?

MX records are used for email services, and tell your domain name where mailboxes are managed.

Gandi, like most web hosting companies, offers an email service as well as your domain's registration package. To link your domain to another email service, simply change the MX records in the zone file. Gandi automatically adds our MX records for our email service when you register a domain with us by default.

Here's an example:

MX records take the following form, and there is usually more than one in a zone (main server + backup server).

@ 10800 IN MX 10 spool.mail.gandi.net.

@ 10800 IN MX 50 fb.mail.gandi.net.

Warning

The period (.) at the end of the "value" is important. If you don’t include it, your record will not work.
