Frequently asked questions about migrating to Gandi V5
Why are legal entities now treated differently from individuals?
Gandi products belonging to legal entities are often managed by several people. All the members of a company's hosting team may need to manage its servers, or the person in charge of managing an association's domains may change from time to time. Sharing a single login/password under these conditions could easily lead to major security issues. For these reasons, legal entities, called "organizations" in Gandi v5, remain separate from user accounts. In a nutshell, in the new system, users are given authorizations over organizations. This way, several people, each with their own account and password, can access and manage the products of a single legal entity, each with their own level of authorization. When one of these people leaves the company, the company's administrators can safely revoke that person's rights.
I have more than one classic account
If you have more than one personal account (in your own name), you will need to activate each of them individually, and they will be merged into a single V5 account provided the first and last names are identical. The rest of the information will not be taken into account when merging the accounts. You can initiate the migration of each account from the migration page.
Important
For the merger to take place, the V4 account you are about to migrate must have the same email address as the "target" V5 account. The system will not be able to detect the merger if the email address is different, and you will be prompted to create a new V5 account.
I have one or more "company" accounts in addition to a personal account
Organization management is central to Gandi V5. If your V4 handle is a "company" (or equivalent) handle, during the migration process you will be asked to create a handle and password (or to log in to an existing V5 account), and to specify a "display name" for this organization. Once everything is activated, you'll be able to view all products belonging to the organization and those belonging to your personal account using the same login. You will be able to filter products "by organization" (personal or professional). You can have as many organizations as you like, as long as they belong to a legal entity.
If you have several handles belonging to the same legal entity, you'll be able to merge them in your V5 account as long as their corporate name is exactly the same. If this is not the case, a new organization will be created with this "different" name. Other data will not be taken into account for the merge. You can initiate the migration of each account from the migration page.
Note
Should you find yourself with "different" organizations due to differences in company names, it is always possible to "move" domains under another organization via a change of owner:
https://docs.gandi.net/en/domain_names/change_owner/index.html
Just as it's possible to use another organization to pay for product renewals, you can delete an empty organization.
Important
For the merger to take place, the V4 account you are about to migrate must have the same email address as the "target" V5 account. Differing email addresses will prevent the system from recognizing the link, and you will be prompted to create a new V5 account.
My new account is not compatible with my v4 account: why?
If you try to merge a v4 account with a v5 account and the system tells you that they are not compatible :
It means that your v4 account is an individual type account (as opposed to a legal entity one) with a first and/or last name that is different from your Gandi v5 account. In such a case, you will be asked to create a new user matching the v4 handle data. If you wish to manage all your products on a single account, you may need to change the owner of some of your products:
https://docs.gandi.net/en/domain_names/change_owner/index.html
I really want my incompatible handle to be merged into my account: what can I do?
If you really want your v4 account to be merged into your v5 account, you can initiate a change of ownership operation from the classic site before importing your handle into v5. To do this, be sure to change the ownership of your domain to the exact first and last name (or company, if applicable) of your v5 account. If the first and last name (or corporate name where applicable) are already exactly the same, please contact Customer Service: support-en@support.gandi.net
Can I import domains into an existing v5 account?
If the owner of the account has the same first and last name (or the same company name in the case of a legal entity) as that indicated in the v5 account, then yes. Go to the account activation page and follow the on-screen prompts.
Why, if I've activated my account can't I see my domains?
There are several reasons why some of your products may be missing from the new site:
- You've created an account on the new site but haven't yet merged your v4 accounts onto it. You can import your v4 accounts onto the new site by going to the account activation page and following the various steps involved.
- The missing products are linked to a v4 account you haven't yet migrated. Don't forget to migrate all your v4 accounts by going to the account activation page and repeating the operation for each of your handles.
- You will see a message displayed on your dashboard if an error occurs during the import of one of your domains. There's an automatic process in place to catch these exceptional errors. If you still see the error after 48 hours, please contact Customer Support: support-en@support.gandi.net
