How to Leave an Organization
It is possible to leave an organization you have created or joined. Once you leave an organization you will lose access to any products (domain names, hosting accounts, etc.) associated with that organization.
Warning
Once you have left an organization, you will need to be reinvited by other members of the organization in order to rejoin. If you are the only member of the organization and choose to leave, there is no good way to rejoin the organization without contacting our support team. Please make this change carefully.
To leave an organization:
-
After logging in click on “Organization” in the left menu.
-
Click on the organization you wish to leave.
-
Under “Leave Organization” click “Leave”
What are the implications of leaving an organization?
The effects of leaving an organization will differ depending on several factors, such as the number of members in an organization or whether the organization owns any products. The following cases explain what will happen in a few different situations.
Case 1: “Empty” organization having only one member
An organization that does not currently manage any products, such as domain names, SSL certificates, web hosting, etc., is what we mean by an “empty” organization. The organization may have never managed products or the products may have simply expired. Likewise, the prepaid account is also empty. Also, there should be no orders in progress. Orders that were started but never paid will disappear from the account two months after they are initiated.
In such an organization, where you are the only member, there is no impact to leaving the organization. However, we would recommend deleting the organization instead of leaving the organization. If you leave the organization without deleting it you will no longer have access to the organization but the organization will still exist. If you should need to regain access to the organization again, even if just to delete it, you would need to contact our support team to do so.
Case 2: “Empty” organization, several members
In an empty organization with multiple members, the effects of leaving an organization would be the same for the individual. However, the other members will still have access to the organization. Depending on the permissions allocated to them, they may be able to make changes to the organization, buy products, delete the organization, and so on.
If you have saved a bank card, it is important to delete it if you do not want remaining members to have access to it. By leaving an organization you give up all “rights” on that organization, which can have consequences if other people still have access to it. Again, we recommend deleting the organization if your intent is to close it completely. If the organization is deleted it will be deleted for all members.
Case 3: Organization with products, only one member (you)
We highly recommend that you do not leave an organization that contains products if you are the only member. The system will allow you to leave an organization that still has products, pending orders, money in the prepaid account, and even a bank card on file. If you leave such an organization, you will lose all ability to manage these products and payments, but the products will continue to exist in the organization. The products will not be erased, nor the bank card. If you are listed as an owner contact for these products you will continue to receive notification emails. Other people listed as contacts will also continue to receive notification even if they do not have access to the organization.
No one will be able to manage this organization without going through our legal department, and only after we are able to verify your identity and rights to the organization.
Also beware that the fact that you have left an organization does not free you from the inherent legal responsibilities and does not protect you from possible prosecution in the event of irregularity.
Case 4: Organization with products, several members
Unless you are the one and only “owner” of the organization and no other member has sufficient permissions to manage it or its products, leaving will have no impact. The remaining members will generally be able to manage the products and, for example, make the changes of ownership necessary to bring the domain names into conformity with the new “management” of the organization.
Before you leave you should make sure there is at least one additional member of the owner team so that someone will have the permissions necessary to make any needed changes to the organization and its products.
Beware that the remaining members will also continue to have access to any methods of payment stored for the organization.
Similarly, any domain purchased in the name of the organization will remain in that name until an owner change has been completed. It is important to make sure that the remaining members have the permission necessary to complete this owner change before you leave the organization.
Case 5: You are a trainee or association member
If you create an account as an intern or member of an association, it is important to clearly separate your personal account, in your name, and the organization of the company or association. You can make yourself a member of the organization, but by clearly separating your account from your organization’s account you will be able to leave the organization cleanly in the future without having to take any extra steps or provide your personal login information.
When you are ready to leave the organization all you will need to do is make sure a replacement is added to the owner team and then you can leave the organization.
If you do leave the organization without making sure a replacement is on the owner team, the organization can still regain access by contacting our support team and going through a verification process. Clearly, though, it is easiest for everyone if you can make sure a replacement is added before you leave.
Case 6: You manage products for several organizations
It often happens that you have to manage products for several entities (several associations for example), because you are “the one who knows about IT”.
The principle of having a personal organization, and being present in the owner (or “administrative”) team allows you to manage the products of several entities, and to disengage from them as you wish by simply leaving the organization concerned.
